Why Most Websites Don’t Make Money

The sad truth is most business websites don’t make money. A large amount of business owners spend thousands and thousands on their website only to have it do nothing. No one emails, no one calls… and no one buys.

So what do we do? Here I talk about two huge errors I see with most websites.

Lacking Any Form Of Conversion Process

Many website owners worry so much about traffic they forget the other important part of the formula. Your website is crying out for a way to convert all those delicious prospects into your new clients. Most website owners spend no time at all thinking about this process.

Believe it or not the secret to making money online hardly ever involves people showing up and throwing money at you. In most cases you’re going to have to sell your products and services to the visitor. Hate selling? It’s time to get over it.

What’s great about the web (while also limiting us) is no face-to-face selling. This means you can put all your fears of rejection behind you and just try to sell stuff. If you don’t get any sales you can always blame your website and save hurting your own feelings.

The bottom line is you must think about the process a visitor goes through to increase your website conversion rate.

A Web Marketing Strategy Doesn’t Exist

This leads us nicely to an even larger problem with most websites… lack of strategy. Converting visitors into buyers is the first missing strategy and the second is getting website traffic. Even if your website rocks on conversion is won’t make much difference if you can’t get any visitors.

So you need to put in place some website traffic generation strategies. These could include search engine optimization (SEO), article marketing, pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, video marketing and social media. But make sure you have a clear strategy for achieving your goals.

Another error (that I’ve made a lot) is to not pick one strategy and follow through with it rather than running around like a chicken with it’s head cut off. So in the end you’ve used all the strategies and gotten no traffic because you weren’t consistent. The way to win is choosing a few key web marketing strategies and then applying them for at least a few months.

When you start to see great results with these strategies then by all means add more. But don’t throw away what got you that far. Keep doing the basics well and you’ll go far.
